A&T Four Member Passing Away

Major Joseph McNeil

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of a true trailblazer and hero, Major General Joseph McNeil, one of the four brave freshmen from North Carolina A&T State University who initiated the historic Greensboro sit-in on February 1, 1960.
Major General McNeil, along with his fellow classmates, sparked a movement that would resonate across the nation and play a pivotal role in the fight for civil rights. Their courageous and peaceful protest at the F.W. Woolworth's lunch counter was a testament to the power of conviction and the unwavering belief in equality and justice for all. Their actions not only led to the desegregation of that lunch counter but also inspired a generation of activists and helped pave the way for the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Beyond his immeasurable contribution to the Civil Rights Movement, Major General McNeil served our country with distinction for 37 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Major General. His life was a profound example of leadership, courage, and unwavering dedication to both his country and his community.

We mourn the loss of a giant whose legacy will continue to inspire us. We encourage you to take a moment to reflect on his incredible life and the profound impact he had on our nation. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit and legacy will live on in the hearts of all who continue to strive for a more just and equitable world.
